Ad was found in a gaming magazine called Play. It was the first ad I saw and I decide to try to working around the ad, rather than to find an ad that working around my idea. The original ad is advertising a Wii game caleed Trauma Center: New Blood and the image is over a blood bag. The idea I have for this ad is based on the current Iraq War surrounding the cost and death, as well as, what other BETTER alternatives the money can be used for (rather than this war).

      Detournment
-Reconstructing a new idea through the destruction of the original. For example, using corporate advertisements and re-working them to push a specific political or social problem, interest or just an idea. What must stay consistent is the existing elements of the piece that is being edited. It is seen as a limitless medium in what can be done or thought up. It strength lyes in challenging and/or informing through devaluation. This could be considered a new way of artistic expression because it encourages the artist to stay away from using expression that is either unoriginal or imitates current or past cultural expressions.

Advertising is part of society and its goal is to manipulate you to feel or think that physical items or purchases in general are needed to improve/better your standard of living. Even if you try to dis-enguage from all the publicity that is put around you, you still are forced to recognize it because it's everywhere you look.

**I do agree that society perception of happiness and authority is based around the idea of having material things that assume to have those qualities. Like having an expensive car or name brand clothing that a company isn't directly trying to sell, but the idea and fantasy you will experience if you have those items. That is a complete reality I think everyone is subjected to. Also, that society belief in itself is based more on how a majority of us go about life, which is not necessary a bad thing, but is motivated by the wrong reasons.

**I disagree with the point that people who do not possess or spend money are considered faceless in society, compared to those who do. You have ads, for example, that urge people to recycle, conserve, or volunteer. Thing of that nature which the goal is to just to get people to care enough, that they want to help. I don't think those people are unimportant or of less importance. Also, I disagree that with the idea of being able to spend means that you will live or have a better life. You may be more comfortable in terms of having everything you ever wanted, but have a horrible life. What comes to mine are celebrities and people who won the lottery. Look at Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, they are extremely rich, but their lives seem like shit. All the money (power) they have and their ridiculous lives are similar to a soap-opera. And lottery winners who you would think would be the luckiest people in the world, but in reality, they have to go through changes that they are just not prepared for. One guy won the lottery and right after, he had all these people mailing him with their problems, which could all be fixed with money. He recieved threats on his on life and lost his grand-daughter to drugs. All this new found wealth made his life worse. So, I really can't agree with that way of thinking.

Hacking any corporate website (one that is seen by many people) and posting a message saying how you just hacked into their system, stating the how you did it and how to fix it. Also, that there is not way of them find you. This displays a sense of control over a known corporate entity, a vulnerability in their system and creates discomfort for that company. It is credible, since you are not lying or promoting something untrue about the company. And the people who are viewing the site, also get to see this. This would be great for a site that is based around their customers. For example a bank, because any customer that banks online and views this, see how the system is not 100% secure and this could definitely consider them to change their service. Or not banking online anymore. But a bank is so typical.

Mark Dery's Essay on Culture Jamming
-disruption through the media market.
-revolting against mass media.
-manipulation through media-based tactics.

-Mass media takes advantage of their power to re-arrange information/ideas to fit their idealogy
or common belief.
-The destruction of T.V.'s symbolizes a revolt against media and freeing yourself from whatever
control, or influence they have on you.
-"Media Burn" looks to increase awareness through challenging "family values".
-Television has become a necessity, like eating or sleeping. The fact it is an intricate part of
our life (providing us with information) gives it a lot of power over how we think, and how we see.
-The ability to filter out the noise, is what many people aren't able to do.

-Journalism and Politics in particular are the two areas that rely heavly on T.v's ability to
act on peoples emotions and further their influence.
-Examples: Presidential Debates, Elections, etc which are televised.
-Became a tool for the government.
-Conmmercializing of the Persian Gulf War
-America's violent bombardment of Iraq, not being televised, because it was considered to be unpopular by
Americans.
-Government controlling the broadcast of what they feel will gather support for the war.
-"Everybody watches it, but no one really likes it." -Mark Crispin Miller
-I'm not sure how deep I should be looking into this, but just as it reads, I like watching T.V. even though
I don't watch it as often. If he means no one likes what it produces, then it is more legitimate. I really don't
like those garbage reality T.V. shows.
-"57 Channels" are for thoses people find T.V. culture to be a negative part because of how it is used and what it
spreads (information). What is going to get us the ratings/views?-the bottom line.
-As information increases (ex: internet), it will become more commercialize and individuals are not aware that this
is happening.

Culture Jamming II
-Guerilla Warfare Signs are meants to form various interpretations on mutltiple mediums.
-With all the signs that we as a society encounter, we lack the visual literacy to understand and interpret them.
-The goal of culture jamming is to disrupt technoculture's use of signs and symbols.
-All forms of advertising are fair game in the world of culture jamming.
-This disruptions is done through interfering in media-based publications that are seen by your average person. With
the intent to create a sparkle (thought) in that person's head.
-With any form of artistic expression, culture jamming is no different. It is done in way that is creates fun, but
also creates thinking and maybe change. (not sure)
-They medium is technology.

Reading the three pieces by Hakim Bey, I decided to go with Poetic Terrorism (PT). Just for the fact that I feel more comfortable wrapping my head around that concept, then I do the other two. I have two ideas for PT, but am not sure if they are actually correct.

PT #1
Mugging someone for their wallet, at night, in a secluded place with the intention of putting money in it, then returning it.
This will definitely get the individual thinking, because they are completely involve in what is happening. It provides a rush or emotional reaction, which is fear initially. After that, confusion can be the next feeling that person has. Now they wonder if they should call the cops or continue whatever they were going to do. That has to leave some kind of psychological impression on the person. I think that reaction is what makes it Poetic Terrorism. The example I use as a guideline was 9/11 - World Trade Center. It was a world wide event, that grabbed everyones focus and will be a day that no one will forget.

PT #2
Hand anyone on the street wearing blue a letter complimenting their outfit and asking them to e-mail or call you, where they bought it.
I don't think this takes it to the extreme like the first one does, but it may generate an awkward thought or response. That is another point of Poetic Terrorism, which is to create a thought that isn't normal, or common. That is what I think, but I could be wrong. This is not suppose to inspire deep thought, but rather curiosity. The curiosity of why does this person, I don't know, asking me this silly question.

My Take on "Theory of the Derive"
                                                                 Christopher DeBose

First off, he encourages that derive a way of lessening boundaries determined by geographical factors or "tags" place on area. Derive is drifting through areas, preferably, not none by the individual, where that person can explore and observe these unknown surroundings. This process is not thought out, but rather spontaneous in it approach. Maybe characteristics or a theme is created about the area that is being drifted. I assumed that this will offer a different fe emotion or way of thinking, that will show up in the photographs being taken.

Debord mentions how individuals set up their own boundaries. For example, the girl in Paris whose activites were recorded, and formed a triangular outline of her daily routines. He consider this as a personal boundary, because of the lack of differentiation in where she went. Even though there is more around her, she doesn't go beyond her usual routine. People being unwilling to allow themselves, Pierre Vendryes used the term "antiderterminist liberation" is part of the reason people are unable to experience a true derive. He relates this to probability experiments. What I took from that is that the chances of anyone experiencing a derive are low if people are influenced by their natural habitual actions. If this is removed, then the chance of a true derive happening is better. I don't think we can strip ourselves of what we know, but we could consciously block it out.

Next, Debord talks about derives being done in groups, with people of the "same level of awareness." Also, some guidelines to doing a derive. Like how long a derive can last. For example, it could last for a few hours to a few months and this can influence change in the derive the person might not be aware of. The mention of how weather greatly affects a derive. As well, how the goal of studying a terrain or becoming "emotionally disoriented" will influence how a derive is done. Lastly, he discusses how doing a derive in your residence is O.K. if it's interesting and not based on not knowing about the city (taking tourist pictures of common attractions).

The idea of derives is to go against what you would behaviorally do. Basically avoiding your usual routine. He talks about how limiting someone to a area they have no familiarity is a good way. He labeled it a "possible rendezvous" where you make a meeting and never show up or force that person to interact with people. This should encourage constant opportunities to experience a derive, but I think this would become annoying if the person has no clue of what is going on. He also compares various activities of expression that are generally the same as derive, but don't encourage independency, and a feeling of distress or observance. Not completely sure about my interpretation of that.

Finally, how derives enable "psychogeographical articulation." This he says go beyond "their main components and their spatial localization." I think he saying that it is not just brick, mortar, and buildings with addresses or a combination of businesses that establish boundaries. Derive should determine boundaries and distance and how an area is viewed.

I really don't have a complete opinion since I have never experience a derive before. If I had to related this to Art, I guess this would influence how someone approach doing Art, or how they see Art. Not sure really.
