Computer games have now exceeded Hollywood movies in global sales. Computer games are now recognized as important cultural and artistic products. This class will look at how computer games are made, why they are made, and how students from all disciplines can interpret and respond to them. Key words include: economics, violence, politics, military, simulation, narrative, and subjectivity. We will not just theorize about games. We will play them! Each student will choose a computer game and play it in depth, relate the experience to game theory and cultural theory, and report back to the class. Students will be introduced to 3D modeling, animation, and game design using 3D GameStudio. Students will produce a final project in their medium of choice. ]]>

You have a broad scope of choices for your final project. The project can either be theoretical or practical. A good starting point is to think about how computer games relate to your major. Below are some examples of projects:

- Architectural space in 3DGS
- First Person Shooter in 3DGS
- Walkthrough gallery of your artwork in 3DGS
- An interactive fiction work using e.g. Storytron
- Fashion designs for a game
- Detailed illustrations of a game character
- Design and mockup of a game controller
- A performance related to games
- A paper on the theoretical aspect of games
- Packaging design for a game (real or imaginery)
- Storyboards for a game idea

The final project is worth 20% of the final grade. Here are the various stages:

1. By Friday November 16 - Blog the idea for your project. Provide as much information as possible including: required research, resources required, the relation of the idea to video gaming, any initial concept images or sketches. I will review and comment on these over the weekend. You will all present them briefly and informally in class on Monday November 19.

2. In class on Monday December 10 and Wednesday December 12 you will each present your final project to the class. The format for this is entirely up to you (you don't need to do Powerpoint) but you need to get across the following:
- a description of your reasons for doing the project, and the steps you went through to complete it
- a description of the project including display of objects, visual imagery, and/or demonstrations
- the relation of the project to the game world and the wider social field, and
- above all, the lessons you learnt that you can share with the class to further our collective knowldege relating to games whether it be practical or theoretical.

3. By Friday December 14 you will blog a summary of your project which will address the same topics as in 2. above. You must include at least one good image relating to your project. If you did a 3DGS project please upload a zip of your working directory.

The grade will be divided as follows:

- The initial concept, including how well you blogged the idea and described it in class = 5%

- The project itself including how well you implemented your initial concept, the effort you put into it, the success of the end result, and your description of the completed project in class = 10%

- The blog summary of the project = 5%

I have a bad cold and won't be teaching today.

Please continue with the Tutorials. I uploaded Tutorial #2 in the post below. One thing I would add is that if you're having problems selecting particular blocks or surfaces, try maximizing the window you're working in. Also make use of the 3D view to confirm which block or surface is selected. You can also change how the blocks in each window are rendered by right clicking and chaning the rendering style. Changing from wire frame to solid rendering may help.

Sarah Garmisa informs me that apart from 2 machines with faulty monitors, all machines have a functioning Windows installation. Please contact her directly in the user support office if you have any problems.

I'll be checking email this afternoon so email me if you have any questions.
