From what I could figure out from the reading, they say 'Cool' is determined by the youth of Western society and is therefore abused by the upper levels of that society. Being 'Cool' means having the freedom to do whatever you want, to be unrestricted and rebellious, but loving power and violence. I actually have 2 ideas, mainly as a cover in case the first doesn't work, but both are related. Calvin Klein ads, the ones with the muscular, well built men with 0% body fat that symbolize the 'perfect man' image are sickening, I've always made fun of them every chance I got. I know its kinda cliche, but I wanna twist them around with an idea I've always had flowing in the back of my mind: make people be forced to see what 'real' men look like. How do I do that? Here: 1. First, the funnier of the two, and the most sickening. Get a picture of your average overweight, hairy, probably not all that attractive man, posing like a Calvin Klein model, and then add it to text like "Fat...Hairy...Ugly...Reality." There are several messages that can be crammed into something like this, as well as a lot of humor. 2. Second, a simpler version that is still funny, at least to me. Take an actual Calvin Klein ad of some model (a few of which I have found and thought of) and add the simple text of "Men...Not found here" or "Reality....Not from CK." Anyway, there we go. From the sounds of it, it is reusing and adapting older pieces of art, whatever form that may take, into a newer form in order to speak a modern message, using that older piece. I could be wrong, but that is what it sounds like. Taking something that already exists, that people know and recognize, and adapting it to say something you want it to say in oder to bring that message to the attention of people. Sounds like a great concept; its both functional and productive, and easier than other forms to do. Try to hack into a cable or satellite broadcast of a Televangelist sermon, or some other religious programming, preferably one with high ratings. Then, try to feed signals of other programs in there, from episodes of South Park to clips from the GTA series to homo-erotic porn, focusing on aspects of modern society that most powerful and recognizable religious individuals have decided to fervently fight against. Don't know if it is possible or even considered Culture Jamming....I'd still like to do it though. It's true, publicity runs off of the desire of the people to make themselves better and to turn their attention from things of actual importance. It's kinda hard to think of anything I was actually against, since it all seemed to go along with what I also thought. The only thing I really had a gripe with with that, when mentioning how sexuality was exploited, he seemed to focus on female stereotypes (I think they took up half the list). It it still true that male sexuality is exploited, though not in a socially negative way. No one ever sees a hairy fat guy on an advertisement, its always an image of male 'perfection'. So, find some bland, gray, concrete or steel warehouse, or office building, and transform as much as you can into an old piece of Americana. Spray on some old crumbling brinks, turn a side into some old rotted wood, so that someone passing by will have something more to look at than the simple, drab concrete of modernity. What is it with people these days? The word "art" is tossed around so often these days its lost its meaning, almost. At least this guy tries to make a case for it, sort of. Paying notice to brushing ones teeth, the motions and actions, and eventually noticing the small muscle contractions taking place every moment without ones knowledge. It is....not artistic, in any way, shape, or form, for the very simple fact that the word no longer has any real definition, everyone has their own opinion on it. There is something special in focusing on such minor details of everyday life, but that does not make it art, or artistic, or even very important. Theres a reason our minds block out most of this junk during our day; because if we don't our minds would probably explode with all the information constantly flowing into it. Think of it; the constant changing wind, temperature, the feeling of your clothes, the noises going on around you, the changing light and shadow as the Sun moves....thats just a fraction of what the everyday human deals with and blocks out as part of their consciousness. When I was reading it, it sounded like it is a form of meditation, if anything. Focusing ones thoughts on actions not usually noticed is a way of heightening the mind, which 'is' meditation, if nothing else. I am tempted to try this out simply to experience it, but I have this odd feeling I'll end up regretting it, mainly because if I spent an hour staring at myself in the mirror I would be late for class...that and I would look like some egotistical narcissist to my roommates. In short, no, they guy should not have even mentioned 'art,' it doesn't matter who he is. Ya, you heard me.
