What do you find so compelling about Half Life?

A on basic level, the storylines are what initially attracted me to videogames. I'm a big reader and usually end up superimposing myself into the stories I read. Games provide the same kind of immersion.
I usually don't enjoy FPS games as they tend to be fairly plotless, run-and-gun experiences. Half-Life changes that by surrounding those action sequences with storylines, dialogue, and puzzle-solving (beyond the usual "get the key" type quests a la Doom).
Half Life not only allows you to interact with the game world through the eyes of the avatar, it places you into the middle of a complex story.
