Mark Dery's Essay on Culture Jamming
-disruption through the media market.
-revolting against mass media.
-manipulation through media-based tactics.
-Mass media takes advantage of their power to re-arrange information/ideas to fit their idealogy
or common belief.
-The destruction of T.V.'s symbolizes a revolt against media and freeing yourself from whatever
control, or influence they have on you.
-"Media Burn" looks to increase awareness through challenging "family values".
-Television has become a necessity, like eating or sleeping. The fact it is an intricate part of
our life (providing us with information) gives it a lot of power over how we think, and how we see.
-The ability to filter out the noise, is what many people aren't able to do.
-Journalism and Politics in particular are the two areas that rely heavly on T.v's ability to
act on peoples emotions and further their influence.
-Examples: Presidential Debates, Elections, etc which are televised.
-Became a tool for the government.
-Conmmercializing of the Persian Gulf War
-America's violent bombardment of Iraq, not being televised, because it was considered to be unpopular by
Americans.
-Government controlling the broadcast of what they feel will gather support for the war.
-"Everybody watches it, but no one really likes it." -Mark Crispin Miller
-I'm not sure how deep I should be looking into this, but just as it reads, I like watching T.V. even though
I don't watch it as often. If he means no one likes what it produces, then it is more legitimate. I really don't
like those garbage reality T.V. shows.
-"57 Channels" are for thoses people find T.V. culture to be a negative part because of how it is used and what it
spreads (information). What is going to get us the ratings/views?-the bottom line.
-As information increases (ex: internet), it will become more commercialize and individuals are not aware that this
is happening.
Culture Jamming II
-Guerilla Warfare Signs are meants to form various interpretations on mutltiple mediums.
-With all the signs that we as a society encounter, we lack the visual literacy to understand and interpret them.
-The goal of culture jamming is to disrupt technoculture's use of signs and symbols.
-All forms of advertising are fair game in the world of culture jamming.
-This disruptions is done through interfering in media-based publications that are seen by your average person. With
the intent to create a sparkle (thought) in that person's head.
-With any form of artistic expression, culture jamming is no different. It is done in way that is creates fun, but
also creates thinking and maybe change. (not sure)
-They medium is technology.
