Reading: Games- The Extensions of Man

Games and technologies are what people turn to under stress. It allows our imaginations to come alive, being able to do things we normally would not do or have the opportunity to do. Games allow us to create an alternative world where one can live with a different identity, however if games does not exist we are stuck or unable to escape from our daily routine/ unchanging state. According to McLuhan, the ancient and non-literate societies believe games to be the model of the universe. McLuhan gave an example of The Olympic games, where people physically imitate the sun chariot by running around the track. Then came literacy, arts and rituals became less physical and more verbal. Games allow us to communicate / socialize in an alternative world, where we play for enjoyment and not physical gain.

Andy Cox:

Good summary. Maybe think about how these ideas might apply to computer games.
