"ART WHICH CAN'T BE ART"

I brush my teeth with my right hand. I always put the paste on first and then run the brush under the water because my sister told me when I was little that the water then "activates" the toothpaste. When I am up for a challenge I try and do the brushing with my left hand. This is extremely tedious and I never feel like I get my teeth quite as clean as when I use my right hand.

I like being mindful - it feels very zen to pay attention to one's actions and take care when doing things. I like the idea of body as art, motion as art - life as art. "Ordinary life performed as art/not art can change the everyday with metaphoric power". I like this feeling of purpose. It is exciting to think that we can be important out of such contexts like HOLLYWOOD and places, where unless you are on the tabloids or newspapers, or the ART STAR of the month that you are important.

"Art shifted away from specialized object in gallery - to real body and mind to technology and regions."

I am ready to assess the ROUTINE and take caution, care and mind in my actions/movements. Unless we start to see art as something that is part of our lives, something that is a part of EVERYONE and something that is IMPORTANT, then we're in real trouble.

Thank you Eric

I just got my first response and it is pretty exciting to have a computer discussion! Eric validated my "activation" comment and it cracks me up that he feels we are in the norm. One of the reasons I posted the first comment about "activating" is, I recently moved in with my boyfriend and he does not water his tooth brush at any time prior to putting it into his mouth - so this makes me think, either I have met the only person in the world like this, or there are two types of people - the watered brushes and the non-watered brushes and I am proof that the two can coexist somewhat harmoniously.

ON a different note -addressing the ideas of art and incorporating art into our lives. I was trying to say how ART NEEDS to be more present. I was thinking about how FRANKLIN Delano ROOSEVELT made all those Public Projects during the depression and it was through ART that people had a new sense of importance, purpose, life, meaning - everything. It took art to raise the nation's moral. I just wish that people (on a huge scale) would again realize the immense importance of the arts in comparison to border control and homeland security; or better yet that art IS homeland security [but homeland security is NOT art {of course through CIA this can be disputed - I'm sure}]. I just wish that government would take an active role again of promoting creativity and imagination, and I hope that it doesn't take another national tragedy to initiate it.

I feel that this article is a step in the best direction to realizing art as more.

Art Project to be Completed in less than ONE HOUR

Sit alone in a place where no one will disturb you. Allow yourself to cry.
Cry a good cry - the kind that makes you breathe better when you are finally finished. When you are done crying go and get an old sock. Burn this sock. Go and scatter the ashes.

Billboards

I thought the billboard art was a neat topic to check out in class. I have a friend who is active in a lot of different public art projects and here is a link to some billboards from his site. I thought others might want to have a look -

He has a lot of work and I think it is worth checking out. His name is Packard Jennings - he's local in Oakland.

Poetic Terrorism

Crochet toilet-paper cozies.
Enhance these little home-spun crafties with scenes depicting our current war.
These scenes should include soldiers and guns and blood and dead figures.
They should also show civilians dieing for no apparent reason.
We can even do some with Petraeus - betray us.
Embellish a few with Bush and the non-witty things he is so good at saying.

These cozies become a piece of poetic terrorism because every time someone goes to use a square of toilet paper to wipe his or her ass, she is reminded of how the majority of the world views America as a shit country. We can have a bit of a shocker that as we sit on the pot doing our daily deeds, going about our business, and then realize that numerous amounts of people are dieing for no good reason except that we are trying (in vain) to rid this world of terrorism. Good luck, and wipe.

Art Sabotage

Take the toilet paper cozies from the previous blog.
Throw them into the toilet.
Do your business -

flush and accent with some strong obscenities!
