PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. I WILL NOT NECESSARILY REPEAT ANY OF THESE REQUIREMENTS UNLESS YOU ASK ME.
You will be detourning (subverting) a print advertisement (this includes public and political messages) in a similar fashion to those that we have viewed in class. The assignment is worth 15% of the final grade. (The Press ID is 5%).
This is a summary of the required products:
2% A blog posting on detournemnt
2% A blog posting describing the advertisment with which you will be working
6% A poster of your detourned advertisement. tiled from at least six letter size (8.5" x 11") sheets. The poster may be in color or black and white. I can help with printing if you don't have access to a printer. This is to be brought to class for critique.
3% A photograph of the poster in public space. This is either the actual poster pasted up or a montage of the digital image of the poster pasted into a real setting - for example pasted onto a photograph of a real billboard.
2% A blog posting with a smaller image of the poster and the photograph
The steps in the process are given below:
Before class on Tuesday November 13
Read Guy Debord's "Detournement as Negation and Prelude". Blog a paragraph on your understanding of the term detournement.
Blog the description (preferably with an image) of the print advertisment with which you will be working. The ad can be from a magazine, newspaper, or billboard. I suggest picking an advertisement that you either love or hate. Pick something that really means something to you. Also blog your idea for subverting this advertisement.
HERE'S TWO IDEAS FOR A STARTING POINT:
1. Keep the same image and just change the text; or
2. Keep the same text and change the image
In class on Tuesday November 13
We will discuss your advertisements and your ideas. We will also talk about how you will produce your advertisement. Do you need to scan an image? Do you need to make a logo? What programs will you use? You will start working on the final project. Note that the proportions of your ad should be the same as the orignal.
In class on Thursday November 15
Amongst other things that day you will describe your final concept and your progress.
In class on Tuesday November 27
