*****INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION*****

Evaluation materials will be distributed to faculty mailboxes on Nov 30.
Please designate an individual to administer the process a responsible
student in the class (an assistant if your have one) or your area's graduate
assistant. This individual should carefully read the instruction sheet
attached to each envelope. The instructor does not administer this process
and must leave the room before forms are distributed and not return until
after the process is complete. You should allow about 20 minutes.

IMPORTANT: If you are evaluating an evening class, please escort the
individual administering the process to the Art office with the sealed
envelope and slide it under my office door 265E.

Evaluations should be conducted during the final two weeks of instruction --
Dec 3 - 17.

November 14, 2007

Class Agenda - Thursday, November 22

- Waking Life - film excerpt and documentary

- Trim and laminate Press IDs

- Students describe final ideas for projects, plus see ad production notes below

- Complete wall drawing!

Ad Production Notes
1. Note on resolution for the final project: 6 pieces of letter sized paper arranged 3 wide by 2 high has overall dimensions of 23.5" wide by 21.5", assuming a 0.5 inch margin per letter-size sheet. If an image were to cover the entire area and assuming a target resolution of 150 dpi, the size of the image would need to be 23.5x150 = 3525 pixels by 21.5 x 150 = 3225 pixels. This is equivalent to an uncompressed image size of 3525 x 3225 x 24 bits per pixel = 272 million bits = 272/(8 bits per byte) = 34 megabytes. Your image will be much smaller than this due to compression but we are still looking at an image of several megabytes. Also - that depending on the format of your ad, it will not necessarilly fill the entire area.

2. Note on scanning for the final project. If you were to use for example, a 10-inch high magazine ad, at what resolution should you scan it? Let's assume you want to fill the longest dimension of your poster which is 23.5 inches at a resolution of 150 dpi, then we'd need to scan the ad at (23.5/10) x 150 = 350 dpi (a standard scan of 300 dpi would be OK for this project).

Any scan from a newspaper or magazine must be despeckled to remove the dot pattern. In Photoshop go to Filter > Noise > Despeckle

3. To remove text or other unwanted elements from an image use the rubber stamp tool in Photoshop stamp_tool.jpg. Option click on the source area, then click on the target area.

4. Illustrator artboard size. Set your artboard in Illustrator to 30" x 30" or larger.

5. Before giving to someone else to print: MAKE SURE IMAGES ARE EMBEDDED (OR ALSO PROVIDE THE LINKED IMAGE) AND CHANGE ALL TYPE TO OUTLINES

FINAL ASSIGNMENT - "DETOURN" A PRINT ADVERTISEMENT

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. I WILL NOT NECESSARILY REPEAT ANY OF THESE REQUIREMENTS UNLESS YOU ASK ME.

You will be detourning (subverting) a print advertisement (this includes public and political messages) in a similar fashion to those that we have viewed in class. The assignment is worth 15% of the final grade. (The Press ID is 5%).

This is a summary of the required products:

2% A blog posting on detournemnt
2% A blog posting describing the advertisment with which you will be working
6% A poster of your detourned advertisement. tiled from at least six letter size (8.5" x 11") sheets. The poster may be in color or black and white. I can help with printing if you don't have access to a printer. This is to be brought to class for critique.
3% A photograph of the poster in public space. This is either the actual poster pasted up or a montage of the digital image of the poster pasted into a real setting - for example pasted onto a photograph of a real billboard.
2% A blog posting with a smaller image of the poster and the photograph

The steps in the process are given below:

Before class on Tuesday November 13
Read Guy Debord's "Detournement as Negation and Prelude". Blog a paragraph on your understanding of the term detournement.

Blog the description (preferably with an image) of the print advertisment with which you will be working. The ad can be from a magazine, newspaper, or billboard. I suggest picking an advertisement that you either love or hate. Pick something that really means something to you. Also blog your idea for subverting this advertisement.

HERE'S TWO IDEAS FOR A STARTING POINT:
1. Keep the same image and just change the text; or
2. Keep the same text and change the image

In class on Tuesday November 13
We will discuss your advertisements and your ideas. We will also talk about how you will produce your advertisement. Do you need to scan an image? Do you need to make a logo? What programs will you use? You will start working on the final project. Note that the proportions of your ad should be the same as the orignal.

In class on Thursday November 15
Amongst other things that day you will describe your final concept and your progress.

In class on Tuesday November 27
You will work on your advertisement all day. If you need to scan image, you are responsible for working out how to do that with the resources availabe at SFSU.

In class on Tuesday December 4
You will work on your advertisement all day. If you want me to print anything for you, you must give me the tiled Illustrator .AI file (NOT PDF) before the end of the day.

Before class on Thursday December 6
Blog an image of your subverted advertisement.

In class Thursday December 6
Bring in your poster printouts and we will assemble in class. I will provide a cutting board, knives, scissors, tape, glue etc.

Before Thursday December 13
Blog the photograph or montage showing your advertisement in public space. Note: this is the absolute final deadline. There's no reason why you couldn't have complete this the week before.

Class Agenda - Thursday, November 8

- Discuss final project requirements (see separate post).

- Trim and laminate press IDs (why did I receive so few? why were some of the file sizes so big? why were they all PDFs and not .AI files?). Note: the Press ID project will be 5% of the final grade.

- Discussion of Illustrator file sizes / create type outlines!!! / insert crop marks!!!

- Press ID "Master Class" - How I made Amy Berk's ID.

- Demonstration of how to tile large images in Illustrator for printing on several sheets.

- Complete wall drawing!

The following are provisional and may be held over to the following week
- Filmmaker Craig Baldwin in absentia

- "Waking Life" excerpt and documentary on the cel animation used in the film.

November 6, 2007

Press ID - Printing and Laminating

Blog a jpeg of the ID plus upload the original Illustrator file by end of day today (Tuesday)

I will print on Wednesday from your Illustrator file.

On Thursday I will bring in the prints. We will trim them and laminate them.

(If you miss uploading your file today, then you will need to bring in a print on cardstock on Thursday)

MID-TERM GRADES

I will be issuing mid-term grades via email at the end of the week. This is not a school requirement, just something to give you an idea of where you stand. Work completed up to the end of Thursday will be taken into account.

The required assignments are given in the Curriculum (see link to the right) and in this blog. Grading information is given in Expectations and Grading (see link to the right). For your information the assignments you should have completed by now are:

- "Art Which Can't be Art" - read and blog summary 5%

- Google Earth Project 20% - complete and upload to blog working .kml file with path and photos

- Yoko Ono Art Instructions - blog an idea and blog the results of implementing another student's idea 5%

- Read Hakim Bey essarys and blog an idea for an act of Poetic Terrorism or Art Sabotage, or an idea for establishing a Pirate Utopia or a Temporary Autonomous Zone. 5%

- Actively participate in wall drawings 10%

- Powerpoint presentation 20%

TOTAL SO FAR = 65%

For full details of the requirements for each assignment search the blog.

The policy about unexcused lateness and absences is clearly explained in the Expectations and Grading. I will be taking these into account in calculating mid-term and final grades.

You all have the opportunity to get extra credit from independent projects (for instance to make up for absence or lateness). I need to give the OK first, so send an email explaining what you want to do.

ARTIST PRESENTATIONS

This presentation accounts for 20% of the final grade. The following will be considered in approximately equal weight for grading the presentation:

- Research

- Visual interest and relevance of the Power Point slides and effects (if any)

- The student's performance of the presentation

During discussions in class today, several people asked about content for the presentation. Here are a few guidelines. They're not rigid rules. You can potentially do a very good presentation by completely ignoring them - just some things to think about.

- The main thing to get across is the concept(s) behind the artist's work. How does does this concept relate to the classic ideas of conceptual art developed by Sol Lewitt and others? What are they saying? or trying to say? or are they just in it for fame and fortune (unlikely)? A presentation along the lines of: they did this artwork then they did this artwork, then this one, and oh there was this one, kind of thing isn't going to get rapturous applause (or a very high grade).

- Use various types of visual imagery - not just pictures of the artist's work. For example pictures of the artist, where they work(ed), contemporaries, etc. You can also show video clips in PowerPoint (but, remember you only have 20 seconds per slide).

- Your presentation is likely to be richer if you've conducted research in the library in addition to Google. Google doesn't have access to all information sources (yet). The size and quality of images on the web can be poor. Scanning from publications such as exhibition catalogs may be required. You could also try the Art Department slide library which may have access to good quality scans. It will be obvious if you've relied on low quality images from the web.

- What was happening in the wider culture when the work was made? And how does their work relate to this? For example, much work in the 60's was influenced by the Vietnam War, civil rights issues, etc. Contemporary artists of today might be influenced by the Iraq War, Globalization, the Environment, etc.

- Beware of arbitrary transitions between slides. Ask yourself why you chose that transition and not another one. How does the transition reinforce what you (or the artist) is trying to say. And that goes for backgrounds too. Why are you using that standard rainbow colored PowerPoint background? Why not use white? Or, what about using faint images of the artist or their work slide backgrounds?

- You will need to practice your Pecha Kucha before presenting it in class.. It is unlikely you will do a good presentation unless you've practiced it several times. Remember 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide and that's it. Check out examples of Pecha Kucha on YouTube, or other sources. I also showed you some sites with tips on Pecha Kucha.

- What do you personally think of the artist's work? Have you gained anything from studying them? Ultimately, this class is all about your personal development as an artist (or non-artist).

That's probably enough to think about for now....

Temporary Autonomous Zone Housing

container2.jpg

Design a modular house made from four (4) stacked shipping containers to provide a home of about 1200 square feet. Two containers on the bottom and two on the top. Top two are shifted to provide a balcony at one end and an overhang at the other. The house is completely self sufficient with solar panels on the top, water tank, and composting toilets. The roof garden is irrigated with recycled water.

container_home.jpg

Find a piece of abandoned land. An area of about 20 feet by 60 feet would suffice. (If narrower, rearange the containers to a vertical stack). Remove any debris level an area and provide a gravel foundation (approximate cost of foundation $1000). Fill the water tank (illegally) from a local hydrant.

The containers for the bottom floor are left as is to invite graffiti. They are mainly used for a garage (veg oil car), workshop, and storage. The top containers are ultra modern with glass windows covering the entire end of each. There is a roof garden for food, and a large balcony/deck.

When busted by the authorities or land owner, call some truckers and move the house to another location. The house functions as a TAZ or Pirate Utopia outside of the normal conditions of house ownership and the inevitable exploitaion of others that goes along with the earning of money to fund it. Ideally the inhabitants will be totally self-sufficient and able to operate totally outside of the modern conditions of production. Their lives will be a continual derive from block to block, and city to city, and even country to country using standard container ships. Living like global gypsies or poetic pirates.

"Hey 410 become a part of V.V.S,"

received via Andrew Bramer's virtual identity................

Hey 410 become a part of V.V.S,

So a few of use are interested in doing some video/performance work, and we would very much like this to be a collaborative effort. Similarto the Yoko Ono stuff we did. We are really exited about the idea ofworking on art as a group, and are curious if any of you were alsointerested. So here is what we have come up with so far.

- Basically it’s an interview with an avatar of yourself, which we createin second life (Second Life is a virtual world with millions of users).
- The only catch is it’s a live broadcast.
- The way we do this is by projecting an image of the avatar “live” in second life.
- Then the interviewer sits in front of the projection next to his or her own avatar.
- The avatar will be life size and the happenings in the background will be live and uncontrollable.
- A camera will be in placed real life so as to capture the video of the two subjects.
- This broadcast will be shown live via the Internet.

vvs-doc.jpg

This will be the basic platform with a few variations on this set up coming in weekly episodes.
Episode one (or the pilot) will be a conversational performance piece.
- The object is to have a conversation with your Virtual self.
- This will be accomplished by using Internet programs known as chatterbots.
- These are simple interfaces that are complex math formulas aimed at reproducing Human speech patterns.
- There are many out there; however none are perfect.
- So what the interviewer will do is ask these chatterbots questions andwhatever the chatterbots response is, will be sent to (Text To Speech)software (computerized voice).
- That way people watching the broadcast will be able to hear the questions and the response.
Episode two has not yet been formalized so we encourage you to think of some ideas that might fit in.

If you are interested:
-E-maileither me Bramerandrew@yahoo.com or Eric at ecaselton@gmail.com with aphoto of your self (straight view Just like the gizmo deal) then we canget them processed before hand.
- Go to the chatterbot databaseweb link and find a chatterbot you would like to talk to. Document whatyou asked the bot and what its replies were.
-Then either e-mail them or print them.
-Remember when constructing the dialogue that the conversation is theactual piece of art. So think about what questions or responses youintend viewers to have.

Thanks a lot V.V.S.

Show a Path and Photos in Google Earth

1. Photos

Create an account in Panoramio. Upload and map your photographs following the onscreen instructions. When done, click "show photograph in Google Earth". Panoramio creates a .kml file that is sent to Google Earth. The file, named with your Panoramio username, will appear under "Temporary Places" in Google Earth.

google_earth_left_side.gif

2. Path
In Google Earth click on: path_icon.gif
A window will open. Enter a title for the path. DO NOT CLOSE THE WINDOW. Click around your route until done. You can change the look of the path in the option tabs in the path window. The path .kml file will appear in the "Temporary Places". The path will have the same name as the one you entered in the path window.

3. Final .kml File

You now have two .kml files: one for the photos and one for the path. We want to combine them. Option click (Mac) or right click (Windows) on the path name in Google Earth. Select "save as" and save as my_name.kml (my_name is your choice) file. Open the file in TextEdit (Mac) or Notepad (Windows). Do the same with the photos .kml file and open it in TextEdit (or Notepad). The photos.kml file looks like this: Download file

Repeat this procedure with your path file, which should look something like this: Download file. The numbers are the coordinates of the path turning points. We now need to paste in the Network code so that the photos will show up with the path. Paste everything between and into the path file just above the final tag. You will have something that looks like this: Download file
