Assignment 1

Games are social reaction to the action of any culture. They are ways of adjusting to the stress of specific actions that occur in any social group. They are way of providing release of particular tension. Art and games lets people get away from their routine tension.

When culture and social change, games also do change. Games can provide many varieties of satisfaction. They play a role of media of communication. They are mass media as they are a way of interpersonal communication. They are a translator of experience and extensions of our social selves. They mimic our situation that we face in our own routine work. Games are an imitation of accomplish situation.

I also think games are a way of people getting out from their routine stress, release of particular tension and therefore people try to have fun. It is a psychological way of our mind of getting out of routine and also adjusting our social reaction. I think games make people aware of controlling the situation and accomplish them.

Atari first console

sys_AtariVCS.jpg

Atari VCS - CX2600 Sunnyvale Edition is the original 1977 Atari Video Computer System, and this particular design was only produced for one year. Because it features six chrome-like switches and has heavy internal RF Shielding, some collectors refer to this as a "Heavy Sixer". At first glance it looks just like the CX2600 that follows in 1978, but it is noticably heavier when compared, and has some extra plastic molding around the back and sides of the unit. These units were manufactured in Sunnyvale, California, and there is a tag on the underside from the manufacturing plant to indicate this. There is also a serial number on the unit itself with a matching serial number sticker on the box. The later model was manufactured in Hong Kong.

official website of Tekken 5 by Namco: http://tekken5.namco.com/

I had played Tekken 5 before but not so often. In the stage battle, most are outside environment. I would like to design an architecture element to the game in the stage battle using 3d program either sketch up, vectorworks or Bryce for an environment. I am thinking about 2 particular stage battle.
1. The stage which is interior space of a house.
2. The stage which is the top of the building (roof structure with surround environment.
I also would like to include 1 new character, and story of a character.

History: Tekken

- For many years the arcade-fighting scene has been dominated by four fighting game franchises. While Capcom and SNK's fighting games have dominated the 2D realm, Sega's Virtua Fighter and Namco's Tekken series dominated the 3D arena.

Tekken Tag: arcade- allow to change player during battle

- As with many fighting games, players each choose a character from different, exotic worldwide settings and fight hand-to-hand with each other. It is primarily a competitive two-player series, but a human player can fight an AI-controlled character for practice or amusement.

- Tekken differs from other hand to hand combat games in some important ways. Traditional fighting games are usually played with buttons that correspond to the strength of the attack (for example, strong punch or weak kick). Tekken, however, dedicates a button to each limb of the fighter, making learning special attacks more of an intuitive process. The player could watch the animation on screen and figure out the appropriate command (if the character kicks low with his right leg, the move is probably executed by pressing down and right kick, or some variation thereof). Whereas traditional fighting games, such as Street Fighter, involve inputting commands as rapidly and accurately as possible, Tekken slows the action down, emphasizing rhythm, strategy, and deception over speed and reaction.

story

The Tekken storyline tends to leave a decent number of plotholes.

Tekken 1 story
A worldwide martial arts tournament is nearing its final, with a large purse of prize money to the fighter who can defeat Heihachi Mishima in the final round of competition. The contest is sponsored by the giant financial group, the Mishima Zaibatsu.

There are eight fighters that remain after winning death matches all over the world. The winner of the tournament will receive The King of the Iron Fists title.

Namco history

logo_namco%5B1%5D.gif

Namco was founded in Tokyo in 1955, by Masaya Nakamura under the name Nakamura Manufacturing Ltd. It began by producing mechanical rocking-horses and similar children's rides, which were installed in a number of department stores in Yokohama and Nihonbashi. It continued this line of production through the 1960s, and expanded with the addition of rides modeled after Walt Disney characters in 1966.

The company's brand name was changed to Namco in 1971, and acquired the Japanese division of Atari in 1974, thus bringing Namco into the coin-operated video game market. Namco Enterprises Asia Ltd. was established in Hong Kong, soon followed by Namco America, Inc. in California. In 1978, Namco released its first arcade video game Gee Bee which was designed by Toru Iwatani who also designed two sequels Bomb Bee and Cutie Q. 1980 saw the introduction of one of the company's most famous coin-operated arcade games, Pac-Man. The main character, Pac-Man, is now the company's official mascot. When Nintendo began producing its Famicom home console unit, Namco started the development of game titles for it, beginning with Galaxian, which had first been introduced to arcades in 1979.

Namco was the industry's first manufacturer to develop and release a multi-player, multi-cabinet competitive game, Final Lap, in 1987. This game allowed up to 8 players to compete when four 2-player cabinets were linked in a simple network. By 1988, the company's capital exceeded 5,500 million Yen. In 1989, another racing simulation game, Winning Run, was released; that same year, the company's expertise with driving simulation matured with the development of the Eunos Roadster Driving Simulator, a joint venture with the Mazda Motor Corporation, followed by an educational program for traffic safety developed with Mitsubishi.

In the 1990s, Namco began directly selling coin-operated arcade games in the United States through subsidiary Namco America. Sennichimae Plabo was opened in Osaka, featuring a new concept of large-scale arcade amusement, and Namco Wonder Eggs, a theme park, was opened in Tokyo. Additional amusement parks were opened, including Namco Wonder Park Sagamihara and Namco Wonder City.

In 1993, Namco merged its US arcade operation, Namco Operations, Inc., with the newly acquired Aladdin's Castle, Inc. to form Namco Cybertainment, Incorporated, bringing the company to the forefront as the largest arcade company in the world. In subsequent years, Namco Cybertainment, Inc. (NCI) purchased several other arcade operators, further strengthening the company's overall arcade operation. NCI now operates arcades under the names Time Out, CyberStation, Aladdin's Castle, Diamond Jim's, Space Port, and Pocket Change.

Also in 1993, Ridge Racer, a driving simulation game, entered arcades, featuring 3D computer graphics; the game was later released for the Sony PlayStation. Another of the company's most famous games, Tekken, was released in 1994, which was also soon ported to the PlayStation. In 1995 the game Soul Edge (Soul Blade in the PAL region) was released. This was the second game to feature weapons in a three-dimensional fighting environment (Battle Arena Toshinden was the first). With its Tekken and Soul Calibur franchises, Namco has been dominating the 3D fighting game market.

On September 2005, Namco was acquired by Bandai and the two companies merged together to form "Namco Bandai Holdings", the 3rd largest video game entity in Japan. As such, Namco is now a part of the Namco Bandai Group.

In January 2006, a Namco Bandai subsidiary was established in the U.S. to handle mobile games in North America, called Namco Networks America Inc. Working with the new 'next-gen' platform, Namco is able to port many of their time-tested arcade games to cell phones. In March 2006, Namco Networks also opened an e-commerce operation, www.clubNAMCO.com offering official merchandise based on Namco games.

I had played God of War 1. It was an advanture game which enable player to move in 3dimensional space. The point of view show in different angles, depends on stages. Some scene is the above view looking toward the character with clift background. The story is base upon fantasy of Greek Mythology of God and Goddess. The story base upon the character life. It start from the end of the story of a Spartan bloke named Kratos. The game's opening cinema shows Kratos hurling himself down a mountain because the gods of Olympus. Then the story sequence move back and forward showing flashback memories of the character; Kratos.

Sun Tzu to Xbox, American's Army website

In the website there is a part that called Real Heroes. Those who are in the army fighting enemies for the sake of freedom of the USA. It seem to me that in the time of war with terrorist,it is a tool to encourage and support their countrymen soldier. I didn't see it as a wrong tool to support and encourage people to see some sense of the reality of war stradegy. But what is bother me a bit is the way they advertise it to be exiciting. The excitement could be aword to describe a game, but it never have that kind of emotion in the real war.

I think, there are no glorious in the real war. There are not a true judge whether which side are bad,or good. I think, the game can be mislead the real meaning of war in a morality sense, even though it provide accuracy information such as geographical based on real locations and weapon could fire the certain amount of rounds before reloading, etc. Although how close the tactic and stimulate of the game imitate the real war, it never have the real feel and sense of emotion in the real war. It didn't do the justice of the way you deal with certain citizen of the "enemies", understanding the situation and people in which war games could never stimulate those real facts.

Military can show people what they have to offer. The games and website encourage people to join the army. It is also help them to judge whether they want to join the army.

Show and tell, Assassin's Creed

I founded a video of develper of the game called Assassin's Creed in gametab website.

http://www.gametab.com/news/692227/

I found this game is interesting after we learnt about american army and discuss about the gameplay and how realistic it could be for the game to immitate the real war.
What I found interesting in this gameplay is this game make the crowd react depending on your move, so the move you make have consequence. I think it opposite side of America Army in the sense of justice.

It is the game made by "Ubisoft" company, the develper of "Prince of Persia" It will release both xbox 360 and PS3 by early 2007. The story tells about 3rd Crusade. Architecture and cites plan base upon developer research and actual people name that died during the Crusad, but the story twist from the historical event with assassination events that never prove to be happened in this history period. The architecture and environment render is much better with new technology of game console being develpe. The develper said the scene and architectural are exactly in the history. I am wonder whether how accurate they are.
